Sharron Wheeler Scar Work Therapy

Sharron Wheeler Scar work is the application of specialised techniques to help relieve discomfort, pain and restriction associated with the formation of scar tissue in the body. Scar tissue is there for a reason and the aim is not to ‘break’ down or remove this fibrous tissue, but to restore hydration, elasticity and healthy function of that tissue.

The techniques are incredibly gentle so there should be no pain or discomfort throughout or after the treatment sessions. Treatment can begin from as little as six weeks post surgery, accident or trauma to help to speed up tissue recovery, however this may vary depending on if there is still inflammation, bruising or infection present.

Although the appearance of the scar may improve with the application of scar work therapy, often helping to flatten raised lumpy tissue or improve the colour of the scar, the main focus is on the underlying layers of the dermis and the fascial system (a form of connective tissue). The aim is to draw fluid from the healthy surrounding tissues, to soften thickened areas, smooth lumps and ‘stringy’ fibrous tissue. It also lifts tissue that is ‘stuck’ down or has a dipped or inverted appearance. Some techniques can help stimulate nerve endings and may improve numbness or loss of feeling, improve the range of movement in the body (not just in the area where the scar tissue is present) and help to soothe and calm overactive nerve endings.

Scar work therapy can be very effective when treating horses as well as people, in fact it is very common to come across various types of scar tissue in our horses’ bodies. Sometimes the cause of the scarring is known and sometimes it is not, but regardless the same benefits apply.

Scar work can either be integrated within a massage treatment or can be booked as an individual treatment session.
